REIV CEO to retire at end of the year; search for new CEO begins

Date: 12 Aug 21

The Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) announced today that Chief Executive Officer Gil King has tendered his resignation and will conclude his near five-year tenure at the end of December 2021.

The REIV has initiated a national search for Mr King’s replacement, with the departing CEO committing to a smooth transition to the organisation’s new leader before his retirement.
President of the REIV, Leah Calnan said her organisation was indebted to Mr King for his service.

“Over the past five years, Gil has astutely navigated an often complex operating environment, working through a raft of sector-impacting legislative changes and new regulations,” Ms Calnan said.

“Within a challenging landscape, Gil has been able to sow seeds for our evolving organisation so that it is ready to grow through its next phase. For example, Gil has been instrumental in establishing a much stronger financial foundation for the REIV - today, the REIV counts more than 80 per cent of agencies in Victoria as members, and at every stage of his work across the industry’s myriad stakeholders, he has put the best interests of our members front-and-centre.”

Ms Calnan added that Mr King has lifted the quality and quantity the REIV’s advocacy function.

“Gil’s leadership during COVID has been unflinching, and he has played a key role in ensuring that the voice of the real estate sector is heard at every level of government and that the sector is recognised as a significant economic contributor to Victoria’s economy.”

Mr King reflected that the time was right for change, professionally and personally.

“I had always considered that five years in this important role was an appropriate tenure and that it would be my final formal leadership post,” he said.

“I exit proud of what we have achieved as a team and sector and I am excited about a quieter future,” he said.

“The whole organisation has done an outstanding job on behalf of our growing membership base – I am grateful to my talented team for their support and thank the REIV Board for its strong leadership and good governance. The fellowship from my state counterparts and REIA CEO and President has also been a genuinely motivating force.

“I extend thanks to our sector’s key local stakeholders, including Victorian Government representatives, leaders from other property entities, Victoria’s business chambers and the media – engagement with them has been critical to our cause.”

The REIV Board moved this week to establish a CEO-search sub-committee, which will work with an appointed recruitment firm over the coming months.

Ms Calnan said: “The REIV will benefit from a new leader with strong advocacy credentials and who is eager to embrace change – agility will be a fundamental leadership trait as we look to the future.”
