Leasing and management of retail premises

The Retail Leases Act regulates the retail leasing sector. It ensures the certainty and fairness of retail leasing arrangements between property owners and tenants, including the mechanisms employed to resolve disputes over retail leases. It covers the rights and obligations of each party. A retail premises is used for the sale or hire of retail goods or the provision of retail services.

Stakeholders include property owners, business owner tenants, estate agents, Victorian Small Business Commission, valuers, shopping centre management, and insurance companies.

REGULATION OF THE RETAIL SECTOR

The REIV made a submission to the Victorian Government relating to the government’s proposed changes to the Retail Leases Act. Following the release of the Draft Action Statement for these reforms, the REIV engaged in an extensive consultation process with the membership. The outcomes are documented in the REIV submission.
