Sunbury is located 36 km north-west of the CBD. Located within the Calder Highway and the Jackson Creek Sunbury is located in Melbourne's north west fringe. The suburb experienced rapid growth during the 1970s and 1980s which is projected to continue due to short medium and long-term residential opportunities. Sunbury has a strong commercial centre and some industrial land but much of the land area remains rural. The suburb also features the Sunbury Private Hospital and the Victorian University of Technology - Sunbury Campus.
