Manufacturing production centres on the BHP Steel Works and the ESSO/BHP petroleum and gas fractionation plant. Hastings has one of the few deep water ports in Victoria. The suburb's residential areas are located in the east of the suburb while the west is more rural in nature. The suburb also features the Hastings Cemetery the Hastings Foreshore Reserve and the Hastings Bush Nursing Hospital.
