Mr Premier, I don’t think you understand.

The inability to buy/sell/ lease property in Melbourne is creating enormous emotional and financial distress in the community. The Premier and his government have not taken the time to understand the impact of a complete lockdown of the property market on ordinary Victorians.

There is no dispute that the health and safety of the community is a priority, and the roadmap out of the lockdown must ensure the safety of all Victorians. However, the path proposed by the Andrews’ Government jeopardises livelihoods and assets of hard-working Victorians who have abided by the rules and restrictions for over six months. Pushing families to the brink, financially and emotionally, is not the answer.

The irreversible impact of these decisions on the mental and financial well-being of people is being ignored. People are unable to find appropriate housing for their families, people who have worked hard to save and build an asset are unable to sell or lease to tide over these difficult times. The examples and stories are overwhelming.

The Real Estate Institute of Victoria has made multiple attempts to explain to the government that private one-on-one inspections can be conducted in a safe manner. This will allow Melburnians to buy/ sell/ rent, saving people undue emotional stress and anxiety.

The REIV is today commencing a public campaign urging the government to reconsider their decisions. It is critical that the Premier understands that the property lockdown is hurting Victorians from all walks of life.

The Real Estate industry understands this is a health issue but has repeatedly demonstrated its success in managing COVID19 with no instances of community infection and is keen to see people able to move home in a safe way.

The real estate industry, on behalf of all impacted Victorians, asks that you allow real estate transactions to resume in a safe and measured way.
