New education requirements to work in real estate

If you want to start a career in real estate or are considering upskilling to become a licensed real estate agent, the education requirements changed substantially from 21 October 2020.


The Estate Agents (Education) Regulations 2020 (the Regulations) prescribe the courses of education for:

The new education requirements reflect significant changes to standards of competency for estate agents and agents’ representatives. These requirements draw on a new training package for the real estate industry that was developed following a national review. This page provides a summary overview of the education pathways available.

The Regulations also provide exemptions for people who have completed previously prescribed educational requirements. Estate agents and agents’ representatives currently working in the real estate industry can continue to do so, as long as they satisfy the exemptions.


STARTING WORK IN REAL ESTATE (AGENT’S REPRESENTATIVE) 

 

This course covers the education component required by the Business Licensing Authority (BLA) to work as an Agent's Representative.

As an Agent’s Representative you can work for a Licensed Real Estate Agent and undertake a broad range of duties and responsibilities such as sales, property management, business broking and buyer’s advocacy.

 

Superseded Requirements

Enrolments closed. The entry level education required to work in real estate is now CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice.


The superseded course included three units of competency from CPP40307 Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate)

  • CPPDSM4007A - Identify legal & ethical requirements of property management to complete agency work

  • CPPDSM4008A - Identify legal and ethical requirements of real estate sales to complete agency work

  • CPPDSM4080A - Work in the real estate Industry
     

Key aspects to note: 

  • These units are not directly equivalent to any units in the new training package.
  • Enrolments are now closed. Students currently enroled must have have all assessments submitted by 3rd September 2021, 11.59pm, including any resubmissions. Access to REIV's e-learning platform (EtrainU) closed on 3rd September 2021 at 11.59pm. 
  • You must be registered with the Business Licensing Authority (BLA) within 5 years from the date of the Statement of Attainment. Please refer to the CAV website for details regarding registration requirements.

New Requirements

The entry level education required to work in real estate is now Certificate IV (CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice)

  • 18 units of competency which includes 5 core units and 13 elective units
  • ​All the Elective Units from at least 2 Groups must be selected

  • Enrolments in this course are now open, click here to find out more.
  • ​All 18 units must be successfully completed (certificate issued) and register with the BLA prior to undertaking any real estate duties.

  • This Certificate IV is eligible for the Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements (BAC) program supporting businesses that offer workplace traineeships. Businesses may be eligible for a subsidy of up to 50% of gross wages. READ MORE



BECOME A LICENSED REAL ESTATE AGENT
 

Often known as the “Licence Course”, this is the minimum education qualification (along with CPP41419) required to obtain your Estate Agent's licence. 

 

Superseded Requirements

CPP40307 Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate) was the qualification prescribed by the Victorian Business Licensing Authority, as the educational requirement to apply for an Estate Agent’s licence in Victoria.

  • 24 Units delivered over 8 clusters

  • Includes the 3 Units that make up the current Agent's Representative Course

  • ​These units are not directly equivalent to any units in the new training package
  • Enrolments for the CPP40307 Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate) have closed.
  • Any currently enroled students must complete the course by 30 September 2021 and be registered with the Business Licensing Authority (BLA) within 5 years from the date of the Statement of Attainment. Please refer to the CAV website for details regarding registration requirements.
